Course Information
This course is designed for the college-bound students who plan to pursue further training in math-related fields. This course is a traditional study of mathematics with a good blend of integration. The lessons will be integrating algebra with geometry and probability. The students will be using technology with the study of traditional mathematical concepts. Real life situations will be visited and students will be expected to communicate solutions verbally and in written form.

Grading/Standard's Based
The purpose of standards-based grading is to improve student achievement by focusing instruction and the alignment of curriculum with the essential standards. It is based on a specific set of standards that students need to meet for each grade/content level. A standards based approach allows parents and students to understand more clearly what is expected of students and how to help them be successful in their educational program.
A standards-based approach:
• Indicates what students know and are able to do.
• Scores indicate a student’s progress toward the attainment of a standard.
• Clearly communicates expectations ahead of time.
• Is based on complex tasks, as opposed to rote memory.
• Emphasizes the more recent evidence of learning.
During the semester, you will be assessed on two main categories: formative assessments & summative assessments. Formative assessments are used as learning tools to measure the student’s understanding on specific concepts or standards and will include assignments such as homework, warm-ups, warm-up quizzes, participation, and chapter quizzes. Summative assessments include assignments that are a cumulative measure of a student’s understanding of several concepts and will be in the form of chapter tests or application based projects.
These categories will be weighted in the gradebook as follows:
Formative Assessments (other) = 5%
Formative Assessments (chapter quizzes) = 20%
Summative Assessments (chapter tests) = 50%
Summative Assessments (open ended/projects) = 25%
At the end of the semester the final exam will count as 20% of your semester grade.
The grade you earn will be cumulative over the entire semester.

Formative Assessments are a learning tool to help the student learn from their mistakes and assess their understanding before the Summative Assessment. Most formative assessments will not be turned in for a grade in the gradebook, so that the student is not penalized for their practice. I will be meeting with students weekly to discuss and monitor homework completion and comprehension of specific Algebra skills. Formative Quizzes will be entered in the gradebook in order to provide students with feedback on their understanding of specific concepts. Students may retake ANY chapter quiz as long as they complete quiz corrections and all homework is complete.
|
Summative Assessments (Chapter tests or projects) measure the overall understanding of the Algebra material. There are no retakes on these so it is critical that students complete the homework, ask questions on concepts and participate in daily activities so they are prepared for these assessments.
